Cardinals add Farrand, Hulst in women's soccer

The North Idaho College women's soccer team has signed Keilin Farrand and Jaimee Hulst to letters of intent, the school announced.

Farrand, a midfielder from Ellensburg, Wash., was a four-year starter for Ellensburg High, as well as being a Scholar Athlete and making the President's List.

"Keilin is an athletic and skillful player who will be very fun to watch," NIC women's soccer coach Dan Hogan said. "She also has the 'soccer smarts' that will allow her to be an immediate impact player for us."

Hulst, from Helena, Mont., played for Capital High School, where she was named Offensive Player of the Year three times, was on the 2012 All-State team, and was selected to play in Montana's Shodair Classic. She is a member of the Montana Olympic Development program, a member of the 2011 Montana Academic All-State team, and won first place in Montana's DECA statewide competition.

"Jaimee has very good speed, a nice touch on the ball and a strong will to succeed. She will be a fantastic addition to our attack in 2013," Hogan said.

Chiefs' Kichton named top defenseman in WHL

Spokane Chiefs captain Brenden Kichton was named the Western Hockey League's top defenseman and awarded the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy at the league's annual postseason awards luncheon on Wednesday in Calgary, Alberta.

Kichton is the first Chief to win the award. He was named the Western Conference Defenseman of the Year in 2011-12, but finished as a runner-up for the final league honor. He has been named the Spokane Chiefs Player of the Year the last two years.

He finished his fifth and final season in the WHL as the league's top scoring defenseman with 85 points, 19 more that the next closest defenseman, including 22 goals and 63 assists. His assist and point total were the most in a single season for a Spokane defenseman and for the second season in a row, he was the only player in the WHL to lead their team outright in scoring.

Kichton appeared in 333 games as a Chief, second all-time, and became the most prolific scoring defenseman in franchise history. His 201 assists are also second all-time, just six fewer than Ray Whitney's 207, and his 67 career goals are 27 more than any other defenseman that played for the team.

Chiefs trade Fiddler for 2014 draft pick

The Spokane Chiefs have acquired a third round selection in the 2014 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft from Moose Jaw in exchange for forward Todd Fiddler.

Fiddler scored a career high 42 goals last season and will be entering his 20-year-old season in the league.

Spokane will have a league maximum three 20-year-olds going into next season with goaltender Eric Williams and forwards Mitch Holmberg and Mike Aviani.

Alessio Bertaggia signed a contract to play professionally in Switzerland and is not expected to return.

Faith is Chiefs' top pick in WHL Bantam Draft

Jeffrey Faith, a 6-foot-2 defenseman from Wilcox, Saskatchewan, was the first of 10 players selected by the Spokane Chiefs at the annual Western Hockey League Bantam Draft held in Calgary.

Spokane selected four defensemen, three with their first three picks, five forwards and one goaltender. He was the 16th overall pick.

Faith appeared in 33 games this past season with the Notre Dame Hounds Bantam team and recorded 82 penalty minutes and 11 assists. He is the fourth defenseman in the last five years selected by Spokane in the first round.
