The Glacier softball team wrapped up its regular season by sweeping a doubleheader against crosstown-rival Flathead on a sunny Thursday at Conrad Complex.

Glacier (14-5 overall, 10-2 Weestern AA) won game one 16-1 and game two 13-8.

Only game one counted toward the Western AA standings, but it had no bearing on Glacier’s place in the conference. The Wolfpack locked up the No. 1 seed a week earlier and were simply trying to carry positive momentum into the state tournament.

“We play so well together, and I was just really hoping to make sure everyone stepped up and make sure we’re prepared to go to state,” Glacier senior Jena Willis said.

“This is our last (regular season) game, so it’s like, why not go out with a bang,” Glacier junior Hannah Atlee added.

The Wolfpack had numerous offensive stars on a day where they racked up 37 hits in two games, but freshman Ali Williams’ performance stood out above the rest. She batted 4 for 4 with three RBIs in game one, then went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs in game two. The homer was her team-leading ninth of the season and the 7 for 9 day boosted her batting average to .590.

“Watching her in the batter’s box is the definition of a kid in the zone,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said. “She steps in there and has great at bats. Teams have started to pitch around her a little bit and she’s had to be a little more selective, but she was on today and she drove the ball.”

Williams roped a pair of line drives and beat out two infield singles in game one. Her home run was a moon shot to left-center field that was hit almost as high as it was far, but she wasn’t completely satisfied with her day at the plate.

“I felt like I could’ve definitely gotten two more hits,” Williams said. “But I feel pretty good about it.”

Willis finished 5 for 10 and hit her eighth home run of the season. Kayleena Ikeda also tallied five hits while Atlee, Kayla Russell, Marysa Rogozynski and Taylor Riggles each finished the doubleheader with four hits.

Glacier only committed one error on the day and Fors said that was as impressive as his team’s offensive performance, especially since the Wolfpack’s pitchers had just seven strikeouts in 12 innings. Glacier has been an offensive powerhouse all season, but its defense hasn’t always been as consistent.

“Defense has been an area we’ve focused on and tried to clean up,” Fors said. “I thought today Flathead did a good job of putting the ball in play and our girls played some pretty good defense. That’s nice to see, especially late in the season.”

Williams allowed one run on two hits in three innings pitched to pick up the win in game one, while Atlee — in her first varsity start at pitcher — allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings to earn the win in game two.

Flathead (6-15, 3-9) has lost seven games in a row and continued to struggle defensively. After committing 11 errors in a doubleheader on Friday, the Bravettes made 12 errors in the two games against Glacier.

Raylene Kerney pitched all 12 innings for Flathead. Sidney Alberts batted 2 for 3 to lead the Bravettes in game one, while Cassidy Smith, Iris Matulevich, Kaitlin Torgerson and Mackenzie Twichel each tallied two hits in game two.

Flathead totaled 11 hits in the second game, an encouraging sign to coach Ashley Fusaro.

“We were very excited in both of our games with the enthusiasm and intensity that we brought,” Fusaro said. “The score didn’t reflect how we felt about those games, but it felt like we got better today.”

Flathead travels to Missoula Big Sky on Thursday for a best-of-3 playoff series. The winner advances to the state tournament May 23-25 in Great Falls.

As Western AA’s top seed, Glacier is off until the state tournament.

“We are so excited to go and be the first seed,” Willis said. “I couldn’t be happier with where we’re sitting right now. We’ve just got to bear down these next two weeks and practice hard.”
