COEUR d'ALENE - Lindsie Scholwinski struck out 16 in a two-hit shutout for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings in Tuesday's 5A Region 1 tournament semifinal against Lewiston at Finucane Park.

On Thursday, she was just as tough on the Bengals, striking out 13 as the defending state champion Vikings eliminated Lewiston 7-0 in the second-place game at Larry Schwenke Field to advance to a state tournament play-in game Saturday at Fruitland High.

Coeur d'Alene (17-8) will face the fifth-place team from the District 3 tournament at noon PDT.

"She was dominating just as she was on Tuesday," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "She's really had their number this week. She's mixing in her changeup really well right now. They've got some really good hitters, but she really mixed it up on them."

"It was just a rough one," Lewiston coach Dave Garrett said. "Lindsie pitched great once again and she's been hard for us to solve the last two games. She was moving the ball around and throwing with some of the best velocity I've seen her with all year. When she needed it, she'd go back and get more and didn't miss with her location. She was just really sharp today."

Scholwinski also doubled in the fourth inning.

"It's exciting," Scholwinski said. "I couldn't have pitched the way I did today without my catcher (Rashell Shaffer) and the way we played defense behind me. It was a complete team effort today."

Coeur d'Alene opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Kylie Rasmussen off Lewiston pitcher Shawnee Zink, who like Scholwinski has signed with Community Colleges of Spokane. The inning was capped by a two-run single by Zoe Clark for a 4-0 lead.

Clark added a sacrifice fly and finished with three RBIs on the day.

"We've got to get our bats going and other sticks going," Bieber said. "We've had some kids in a slump, but getting this win was big for us. I think if we can get our bats going and play good defense, we should be able to get back to that state championship game and defend."

First up is Saturday's play-in game for the Vikings.

"It's a crapshoot when you go in against a team that you haven't seen," Bieber said. "Usually, going into a tournament, you've got some time to get some information on the other teams, but right now, I don't know who we're playing (Saturday). I don't know if they're a hot team or had a bad couple of games down there at regionals. I'll be doing my homework tonight (Thursday) and figure out what's going on. This team is ready to get back to the state tournament. This is the state tournament for them right now."

Lewiston finishes 14-11.
