LEWISTON - There were some blazing performances as the 5A and 4A Region 1 track and field meets at Vollmer Bowl got underway on Friday.

Literally.

"For everybody, it was hot. And I mean HOT," Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. "It's an awesome track venue, but down in that bowl, with no wind, it was a cooker for sure. The kids performed awesome under the conditions."

Lake City's girls hold a 1.5-point lead over Coeur d'Alene after the first day. Coeur d'Alene leads the boys team race.

Kasey Widmyer of Lake City broke her own school record in the triple jump, winning at 36 feet, 1 inch. Other local individual winners included Josie Brown of Coeur d'Alene (3,200), Brittany Pope of Lake City (high jump), Makayla Strand of Coeur d'Alene (pole vault), Kassie Whitcomb of Lake City (discus), Kyler Little of Lake City (3,200), Samuel Lee of Coeur d'Alene (high jump), Jake Jermyn of Coeur d'Alene (pole vault) and Makenzie Baker of Coeur d'Alene (long jump).

Sandpoint's boys and girls lead the 4A meets after the first day.

Lakeland's winners were Jordan Ward (high jump) and Britt Dickens (pole vault).

The meets conclude today. The top three finishers, plus winning relays, qualify for state next Friday and Saturday at Eagle High. Fourth-place finishers will also be considered for wild-card berths.
