COEUR d'ALENE - Kootenai County Clerk Cliff Hayes said Friday that in-person absentee voter turnout has been sporadic and low so far for the May 21 election.

In-person absentee voting began earlier this month to serve voters who plan to be out of town when the precinct polls open to voters on May 21.

The in-person voting option is still available to absentee voters until May 17. Those wishing to vote absentee in person can cast a ballot at the Kootenai County Elections Office, at 1808 N. Third St. in Coeur d'Alene. The office is open for voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Kootenai County is mailing absentee ballots to those who cannot vote in person, and the return postage is pre-paid.

Voters who want a ballot mailed to them can call the elections office at 446-1030, or download the Absentee Ballot Request at: http://www.kcgov.us/elections/AbsenteeBallotApplication.pdf

The May 21 election is for non-partisan taxing districts, such as school boards, the hospital district and water districts.

Ballots will vary depending on where voters live, the ballot could include:

* Board members for Alpine Meadows Water and Sewer district

* Levies for Kellogg Joint and Plummer-Worley Joint school districts

* Trustees for selected zones in Coeur d'Alene, Lakeland, and Post Falls school districts

* Trustees for Kootenai Hospital district

Voters county-wide are eligible to vote for hospital trustees. Only voters registered within school or water district boundaries are eligible to vote on those ballot measures.

Currently registered voters should bring a photo ID, or may sign a Personal Identity Affidavit.

New registrants, or those who have moved or changed names, must bring a photo ID and a document, such as a utility bill or vehicle registration, that has been sent to them at their current residence and dated at least 30 days prior to their voting.

Voters with questions about their proof of residency documents should call the elections office at 446-1030.

The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is Wednesday, May 15.
