What's happening to our country?

I tend to get more disillusioned each day as I watch what is happening to our country. Our leadership is failing at their jobs and all they do is blame everyone and everything else.

Think about it… the national debt is a flat out disgrace; our schools are graduating people who cannot read, the Affordable Care Act is unaffordable, 15-year-old kids can now buy anti-pregnancy pills over the counter without prescription and without parental notification; and what the government is trying to do with illegal immigration is on the border of being illegal.

The abortion issue has descended into the streets of hell… we have so-called clinics killing babies who happen to live through the insidious act of abortion and the “left” in America defends it, in fact some suggest infanticide should be the norm of the day. (I mean why should someone have to have a blue-eyed child if there is a choice; wouldn’t Mengele be proud?)

The Pentagon is developing plans to court-martial soldiers who express or share their Christian faith; people with conservative views are not allowed to speak at certain schools; the mainstream media has lost its integrity and purpose and the Benghazi travesty is a national disgrace… people lied, Americans died and the media cried over lost subscriptions and missed lunches.

Some in the ever-vigilant press, when pressed, suggest the Benghazi episode was just an “unfortunate incident” and that we should just let it go. Ask Bill Maher or Jonathan Alter or any other progressively inclined so-called journalist and they will fall over themselves trying to find anything but the truth. They wouldn’t recognize the truth. They are the same ones that contend it is those on the “right” who are simply trying to make political hay out of it. Really?

Think about that for just a moment. If what they contend is true, that those on the “right” are trying to make political hay out of the “unfortunate incident” then it also means that those on the “left” could not care less about the truth. They could not care less about the promises made by President Obama and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, when they said that they wouldn’t rest until they brought the murderers to justice and that they would seek out the truth and report back to the families of the fallen and thus to the American people. That was eight months ago and what do we hear from the administration…?

The White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, said on behalf of the president and thus Mrs. Clinton, that the incident “happened a long time ago.” This was said while the investigation moves forward by caring Americans from both sides of the political aisle because truth matters… or at least it should… shouldn’t it?

Even today as I write this, the investigation continues because the truth does matter and there seems to be some witnesses to the event who also want the truth to be told… the truth of why and how four men died for the country they loved defending. Yet… as sad and sickening as the thought may be, there are those who just want it to go away.

What in the world can the Democrats fear so much by not wanting full disclosure? Future elections more important than truth, integrity, honor? Some may refer to it as stonewalling… I call it what it is… a massive cover-up. This entire boondoggle was totally mishandled from the very beginning. Why? Political careers  at stake? Again I ask, what are they afraid of?

Watergate was a horrible mess and a massive cover-up and a president was forced to resign or be impeached. The Benghazi incident is many times worse. Americans died.

It’s a shame we have to live with this black cloud hanging over the country.

The question then is simple… Will we find the answers? The country seems to be split on the outcome. The “left” seemingly wants the curtain closed and the issue forgotten since it was “such a long time ago.” The “right” is pushing for the truth to come out and will press the issue until they get the answers. The president shows no leadership on the issue and the former secretary of state believes, “What difference, at this point, does it make?”

What difference does it make? If we allow this travesty to go unanswered and the perpetrators are allowed to go free; if the promise of the president of the United States to bring the murderers to justice was a lie and we as a people sit on our back ends and say nothing, we are no better that those who killed our ambassador and the three American heroes who died for our country.

What difference does it make? How about accountability? Integrity? Honesty? Honor? Or better yet… Ask the families, what difference does it make?

Let the congressional hearings continue… it’s about time.

We need to keep talking - and listening - to each other

After reading through the Daily Inter Lake on Sunday afternoon, I determined I should at least respond to a couple of the letters to the editor. The subject matter is of importance since both letters basically attacked the idea of Dinesh D’Souza speaking at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts on March 10.

OPINION: 'Once upon a time...' (It's not a fairy tale; it's American history)

Once upon a time... we relished the thought of honesty. We cherished the stories of our first president speaking the truth when it came to chopping down a cherry tree. Now it seems one who may run for the office of president of the United States can lie and for some it doesn’t matter.
