PREP SOFTBALL: Coeur d'Alene wins play-in game, on to state

FRUITLAND - After the job was done and the team gathered in the outfield for some postgame comments, Coeur d'Alene High softball coach Larry Bieber joined the huddle and let out a scream.
"About time," he shouted to his players, after the Vikings whipped Capital of Boise 10-0 in a state 5A softball play-in game Saturday at Fruitland High.
"We did everything we've been working on all year - playing great defense, hitting the ball and executing both offensively and defensively," Bieber said. "I felt really good about the way we played today."
Coeur d'Alene (18-8), the defending state champs, opens state vs. District 5-6 champion Highland (20-5) of Pocatello on Friday at 9 a.m. at Ramsey Park in Coeur d'Alene.
Brooke Albertson extended her single-season home run record with her 11th, a two-run shot to key a six-run second inning for the Vikings. She finished 3 for 3 with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs.
Lindsie Scholwinski struck out nine in a five-inning two-hitter.
Lake City (24-0), the Region 1 champion, opens state vs. District 3 runner-up Rocky Mountain (18-7) of Meridian on Friday at 9 a.m. at Ramsey Park.

PAYETTE - Held to one hit through four innings, St. Maries broke loose for seven hits and all six of its runs in the final two innings to beat the Hornets in a state 2A play-in game.
The Lumberjacks (8-15) had five strikeouts among their first nine batters. In the fifth, Katie Schaum hit a two-run single to give St. Maries the lead, and Haylee Waddell added a two-run double.
In the sixth, Kristen Womack and Clarissa Stephenson chipped in run-scoring singles.
"We kinda figured it out a little bit," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. "I don't know what we figured out, but we figured it out."
St. Maries opens vs. Malad, the District 5 champion, in its opener at state Thursday at 9 a.m. at Orofino High.
