LEWISTON — Down a runner to the flu on Saturday, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings threw together a 4x400-meter relay team at the last moment to compete for a state 5A berth.

It turned out just fine.

The 4x400 relay team of Samuel Lee, Addison Johnson, Makenzie Baker and Michael Dunton won the event in 3 minutes, 33.10 seconds, eight seconds faster than second-place Lewiston as the Region 1 meet in the 5A and 4A classifications concluded at Vollmer Bowl.

“It’s been a long time since we had a 4x400 team to state,” Coeur d’Alene coach Linda Lanker said. “We had one kid sick and another drop a weight on his toe a few weeks ago, so we grabbed some sprinters, threw it together and now they’re going to state and ran a decent time.”

Maddison Ward of Lake City won the 100 and 200 and Wednesday Walton of Post Falls won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Other individual winners included: Addison Johnson of Coeur d’Alene (100), Chris Baker of Lake City (200), Bret Davide of Post Falls (400), Dunton (1,600), Kyler Little of Lake City (1,600), Krista Story of Coeur d’Alene (1,600).

In the 4A meet, Sandpoint won the boys team title, edging Moscow 76.5-73, and Moscow won the girls title, edging Sandpoint 77-76.

Michael Olson won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles for Lakeland and Lily DeAragon of Sandpoint won the 200 and 400.

Other individual winners included: Tim Prummer (400) and Sam Levora (1,600) of Sandpoint, Mikahaela Woodward of Sandpoint (1,600) and Jordan Ward of Lakeland (100 hurdles).
