A tractor-trailor accident that injured a 57-year-old Calgary, Alberta, man on Saturday blocked the westbound lane of Highway 53 at the U.S. 95 interchange for nearly five hours, according to Idaho State Police.
Derek Kikstra was eastbound on Highway 53 at milepost 13 just south of Garwood at 11:42 a.m. in a 2001 Western Star conventional semi and trailer carrying molding. Kikstra failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and lost control of the semi and trailer, which caused the vehicle to tip onto its side, according to police.
Kikstra, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Eastbound traffic on Highway 53 from Rathdrum was diverted onto Old U.S. 95 during the cleanup.
An investigation continues. The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho Transportation Department assisted ISP.
