Frederick Daniel Koenig, 85, of Mount Pleasant, Mich., passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Fred was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Kalispell to William and Wanda Koenig.

He married Frances Marie Becker on Aug. 18, 1962, who preceded him in death in 2000. Fred was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and sister, Evelyn McKinley.

Fred completed his undergraduate work in physics at the University of Montana, Missoula and earned master’s degrees from Oregon State University and Michigan State University. His career included teaching mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology at the high school and collegiate levels in Montana, Alaska, Oregon, and Michigan at institutions of higher learning that included Concordia College, River Forest, Ill.; Oklahoma State University, Stillwater; Northern Illinois University, Dekalb; and General Motors Institute, Flint, Mich.

After moving to Mount Pleasant in 1974, Fred worked in the industrial uniform and retail hardware businesses and retired in 1984. Fred was a Sunday school teacher, served 10 years as the service coordinator for Community Cancer Services and held many offices within his church.

Sept. 21, 2003, Fred married Betty Jean Funnell of Mount Pleasant. In this marriage, Fred’s family grew with the addition of five children and their partners, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his wife, Betty Jean; his brother, Herbert and Vonnie of Kalispell; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant, where he has been an active member for many years. Pastor Dana Hendershot will be officiating and interment will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 at Clark Family Funeral Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Visitation will continue the day of the service at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
