PREP GOLF: Cd'A boys tied for second in 5A
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 8 months AGO
Winds upward of 50 miles an hour gave many golfers problems Monday on the first day of the state 5A golf tournament at the Lewiston Country Club.
But the bigger challenge for the Coeur d'Alene Viking boys, who are tied for second after the first day after shooting 305, is the Eagle Mustangs, who blew through the course en route to a 290 and a 15-shot lead heading into today's final round of play.
"We're doing OK. Eagle is just ... wow, they're unbelievable," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "They've got four, five, six D-I players ... that's the best high school team I've seen in 10 years."
John Duffin of Coeur d'Alene shot a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for sixth. Chase Lincoln and Michael Porter each shot 76 and are tied for 11th. Eagle's five players are in the top nine individually.
"Greens were running around 11 (on the Stimpmeter), and there were 40-50 mph winds over the last few holes," Duncan said. "Balls were literally blowing off the green. We were solid; I was proud of the boys."
Coeur d'Alene is tied with Lewiston for second, and Boise is seven strokes back. As for the Vikings catching Eagle today, Duncan said "it's not probable, but it's doable."
Post Falls is in seventh out of nine teams after a 334. Kenny Dodge led the Trojans with an 81.
Rocky Mountain's girls shot 334 and lead Lewiston by 16 strokes. Lake City's girls are eighth, Post Falls ninth.
Elsa Goodsen shot 94 for Lake City.

Lakeland junior Derek Bayley, the defending boys state champion, struggled with three-putts and an out-of-bounds en route to an 82 on the first day of the state 4A tournament at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow.
"The course was really hard, and they had a hard time adjusting to the greens, and getting the ball to go where they wanted it to go," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "I think it was one of those days, with Derek and a couple other kids, they hit good shots and ended up in bad positions. But I'm looking forward to our boys competing on the second day and making something happen."
Hunter Ostrum of Bishop Kelly shot a 72 and leads by one stroke.
Twin Falls shot 311 and leads by five strokes over Middleton and Bishop Kelly. Lakeland shot a 344 and is in sixth.
In the girls tournament, Sierra Tingey of Lakeland is tied for seventh after shooting 89 - the first time she's ever broken 100, Maddy said.
"She came and saw me this morning and said she was sick, and had a head cold," Maddy said. "She didn't feel well, and I think she just went out and played relaxed and shot a good score."
Lakeland's girls are in seventh after shooting 454. Bishop Kelly shot 344 and leads by 17 strokes.
The 4A golfers avoided the rain, but some of the later starters played their final holes in high winds.
