School carnival

The Ruder Elementary School carnival will be held on Friday, May 17, from 5-9 p.m. with food and games. Funds raised by the PTO will go to new playground equipment. The PTO has raised $11,000 so far in this effort.

Grad party

The Columbia Falls Class of 2013 parent committee needs to get permission slips from all seniors by Tuesday, May 28, in order to attend the graduation party. Forms can be found at the high school office, on the high school Web page or by calling Kathy Price at 892-1162.

Awards ceremony

The annual awards night at Columbia Falls High School will be held in the Little Theater on Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m. Numerous scholarship representatives will be on hand to present awards to the Class of 2013.

Nursing grads

Four Columbia Falls students graduated from the practical nursing program at Flathead Valley Community College on May 17. They are Laura Burgi, Jenica Kelly, Kelly Palmer and Alison Smith.

Dean’s list

Two Columbia Falls students were named to the dean’s list at Crown College, in Saint Bonifacius, Minn. — Lucas Baumann, a intercultural studies major, and Shane Johnson, a English education major. To be eligible for the dean’s List, students must have a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
