The Coeur d’Alene High boys golf team still came away with reasons to smile after coming up short of a state 5A golf championship on Tuesday at the Lewiston Country Club.

Coeur d’Alene shot 294, an improvement of 11 strokes from its opening round, and finished second, 25 shots behind Eagle, which came away with a second straight championship.

“I’m real happy with how we finished,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan, who is in his eighth year. “We’ve had five second-place finishes since I’ve been here and usually come home disappointed, but we shot really well and had a lot of boys shoot well. It was a really good day for us overall.”

Eagle shot a 574 — two-under par for the tournament.

“They would have beaten many, many college teams,” Duncan said. “It is what it is. You just go out and play your best. We have a lot of good golfers coming in next year and we’ll be competitive again.”

John Duffin (sixth with a 146), Michael Porter (ninth with a 149) and Chase Lincoln (10th with a 149) earned medalist honors for placing in the top 10.

Post Falls was seventh, led by Corey Beaver (157).

Elsa Goodsen shot a 188 for Lake City to finish 19th in the girls tournament.

Lewiston senior Amy Hasenoehrl won her second straight girls title, beating Gabby Barker of Vallivue in a playoff.

Kellogg senior Kaceelyn Pouttu, a Weber State signee, won her fourth straight state 3A girls title after shooting a two-day total of 148, leading the Wildcats to their first state championship in school history at The Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls.

“Winning the team title means a lot because of what kind of accomplishment it is,” said Kellogg coach Simon Miller, who is retiring following the tournament. “But it means even more because we’ve been chasing it for so long.”

“It’s relieving to get a fourth individual title with the pressure that comes along with it,” said Pouttu, who shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. “It feels awesome to win the state championship with my team. We had a great season this year.”

Timberlake’s Dylan VanWingerden shot a 163.

Ryan McNulty posted a two-day total of 169 for St. Maries to finish eighth and lead the Lumberjacks to a third-place finish and a trophy in the state 2A tournament at Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley.

“We knew coming into the tournament that the kids had been playing pretty good,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “As the scores kept coming in (on Tuesday), we kept creeping up the ladder. This is a good group of kids. They’ve worked really hard to get themselves in a place where they can compete at this level.”

The St. Maries boys were named the state 2A golf academic champion with a cumulative grade point average of 3.52.

McKenzie Rose shot a 210 to finish eighth in the girls tournament for St. Maries.
