Whitefish Theatre Company closes its 2012-13 season in intimate cabaret style with “Becky’s New Car” at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

This touching comedy opens with a sneak preview at 7:30 p.m. May 23. Performances continue May 24, 25 and 31 and June 1, 7, and 8 at 7:30 p.m. Opening night May 24 is a special Ladies’ Night only performance.

“Becky’s New Car,” written by Steven Dietz, is a contemporary comedy with serious overtones that stages a devious and delightful romp down the road not taken.

Becky Foster, working at a car dealership, is caught in the confusion of life and wanting an escape. When a wealthy suitor presumes she is a widow — and she doesn't correct him — she finds herself literally crossing a double yellow line between the competing roads in her life until it quickly and hilariously accelerates out of her control. Viewers are offered a chance to ride shotgun to Becky’s journey as she breaks the “fourth wall” by addressing and engaging people in the audience.

“This play explores a number of issues, but the heart of the story is about the detours we make on the road to happiness,” director Linda Grinde said. “Through fantastically funny scenes about class, wealth, romantic love and holding down a job, the characters, in the end, are looking for what really has meaning in their lives.”

“My cast is so perfect,” she adds. “After 30 years of directing, I am so privileged to have a cast with such experience and such a capacity for comedy.”

The production features Scarlett Schindler as Becky Foster, as well as veteran actors Jim Mohn as Joe Foster, Aaron Turner as Chris Foster, Russell Moes as Walter Flood, Jenna Kubiak as Kenni Flood, Wayne McEntire as Steve Singletary and Kim Krueger as Ginger.

Tickets are $20 for reserved table or mezzanine seating with food and wine available for purchase. Tickets for the sneak preview performance are $10, sold only at the door. Tickets for the Ladies’ Night May 24 are $25 and include wine and light hors d’oeuvres.

Tickets can be purchased at the box office, 1 Central Ave., Whitefish; at www.whitefishtheatreco.org; or by calling 862-5371. Box office hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before performance times.
