Bulldogs looking to do some damage at state track meet

SANDPOINT — It’s been a stellar season for the Sandpoint track team, which will look to end the season on a high note on Friday and Saturday at the 4A state track meet at Eagle High School.

If the state seeding is any indication, a handful of Bulldogs are legitimate contenders for not just podium spots but state championships. As many as six longtime Sandpoint track records are also under siege.

“If we can’t get firsts, we want to get records,” said Bulldogs head coach Dave DeMers. “We’re close to a lot of them.”

The boys team won a regional championship for the first time since 2004, led by junior Sam Levora, who already holds the 1,600 and 3,200 school records, and hopes to lower both at state. Levora’s 4:19 in the 1,600 was the top 4A seed time, and he’s No. 2 in the 3,200. In both races, he’ll have to contend with the defending state champion sophomore Elijah Armstrong from Pocatello.

“If he wants to compete with Armstrong, he’ll have to go faster than he’s ever gone. In the mile, Sam has proven he has the foot speed,” said Bulldogs distance coach Matt Brass. “The race will go out fast, it’s being able to sustain and finish.”

Defending 4A state discus champion Nikole Alamillo is seeded No. 1 in the discus. After a slow start, the junior has been steadily progressing her marks at each meet, with a top throw of 129-9. Her personal best is 131-4, less than four feet off Michelle Chastain’s record from 1983. Her mom and throwing coach believes she has the physical tools to win another title, but nothing is given at state.

“She just needs self-confidence,” said Laura Alamillo. “We had a slump at the beginning of the season, but she worked her way out of it.”

Senior Maddie Suppiger is making her fourth trip to state, and comes in as the No. 2 seed in the high jump after hitting 5-2 at districts.

“She’ll need at least 5-2 to get a top three finish,” said DeMers, noting Suppiger just missed 5-4 last weekend. “Her 5-4 jump she hit with her feet. She has the potential to do it.”

DeMers believes Chase Rodriguez is a dark horse to contend for a medal in the long jump. The 6-foot-5 junior is still refining technique, and has the potential to hit a big jump and possibly break Andy Fuhriman’s school record of 21-6, set in 1993.

“If Chase would extend himself off the board, he could win the thing,” said DeMers, who works with the jumpers. “If he hits a big one, it’s going to go.”

Junior Lani Wahl has come on of late in both the triple jump and the long jump, and soared 33-7 last week despite giving a foot away on takeoff. DeMers believes if she pops a jump at state, she could challenge for the SHS record of 34-2, set by Lindsay Larson in 2000.

Rounding out the Bulldog girls are Mikhaela Woodward (3,200, 1,600) and Lily DeAragon (200,400), who were both district champions and could be in the medal hunt with some personal best times, and Maddie Schoening (long jump).

“Lily’s got a chance in the 400 because of her guts,” said sprint coach Steve Miller of the junior. “She’s rather hurt and win than hurt and lose.”

Rounding out the boys participants are Tim Prummer (400), Matthew Burgstahler (800), Kyle Perry (100), Grant Kennaly (high jump), Nathan Schwartz (110 and 300 hurdles) and Todd Pays (shot put and discus).

Burgstahler finally broke the two minute barrier at districts, and will look to challenge Phil Martin’s 1995 school record of 1:58 in the 800. Prummer has been striving to break Lee Hall’s 1950 record of 49.0 in the 400, and just missed cracking 50 seconds at districts. With the added adrenaline of state, it’s yet another record that could be broken if all goes well.

“I think he can,” said Brass of Prummer breaking the record. “If he lets the competitiveness kick in, be could break it.”

The state 4A state meet runs Friday and Saturday at Eagle High School.
