Runs, runs, runs

The Coeur d'Alene Vikings have scored 89 runs in their last five games.

But none of that matters now.

All that matters is what happens over the next three days.

The Vikings scored 25 runs to beat the Lewiston Bengals 25-15 in the regional championship game last Tuesday at home.

"We've been an extremely offensive team the last four or five games," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "As a coaching staff, we thought we could be a highly offensive team this year. We've struggled at times, but the state tournament is about quality pitching and quality hitting."

Coeur d'Alene (19-5) opens state 5A baseball tourney play today against Eagle (17-8) in the final game today at 6:15 p.m. PDT at Memorial Stadium in Boise.

In the regional tournament, Coeur d'Alene scored 45 runs and allowed 18 in wins against Post Falls (20-3) and Lewiston.

"It's been about the timing of the hits for us lately," Rook said. "All the mistakes are magnified at the state tournament. Every team plays with a lot of energy and there's eight good teams out there."

Coeur d'Alene has had its state title hopes derailed in the first round each of the past two years - both times by Mountain View of Meridian. The Vikings rebounded to win the consolation title each year. The Vikings shared third in 2010 after having the third-place game rained out against Rocky Mountain of Meridian.

"It's a coin flip right now," Rook said. "We've had teams in the past that I've thought had a good chance (at winning a state title)."

Rocky Mountain of Meridian won the 5A title last year and advanced by defeating Lake City 7-5 in a state play-in game last Saturday in Lewiston.

"These guys have worked hard and had a lot of attachment to the program with some of their older brothers playing," Rook said. "I'm pretty proud of the coaches and players right now."

4A: Pocatello won the 4A tournament last year at Rodeo Park in Nampa.

Moscow (9-10) defeated Lakeland in the championship game of the Region 1 championship last Saturday to advance to this year's tourney at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.

3A: Timberlake (14-7), which went 0-2 in last year's tournament, plays Kimberly (17-5-1) in the tournament opener today at Fruitland High, at 9 a.m. PDT. Because of a conflict, the tourney was moved from its usual home in Ontario, Ore.

It is Timberlake's third appearance in the last four years after qualifying for state for the first time in program history in 2004.

Priest River (15-7) advanced by winning the District 1 tournament second-place game to face South Fremont (13-10) also today. The Spartans, in their fourth trip to state in school history, are looking for their first win.

Fruitland won the 3A title last year in Ontario.

2A: The St. Maries Lumberjacks, who moved from 3A to 2A, have lost just twice this season, at Kendrick in eight innings and 6-5 to Timberlake, which qualified for the state 3A tournament.

St. Maries (16-2) lost 10-2 to Snake River in the 3A third-place game last year and returns most of its roster from last year. The Lumberjacks open this year's tournament today against Melba at 9 a.m. PDT at Rodeo Park in Nampa.

"We've just been getting production throughout our lineup," fifth-year St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "One game, it's the top third of our lineup, another it's the middle. We have a lot of real competitive kids that play the game right."

Defending champion Malad opens against District 1-2 runner-up Grangeville at 3 p.m.

"If our pitching staff throws strikes and we can play defense, we could compete for a championship," Tefft said. "State tournaments are all about pitching and defense and now we'll see if we can put the ball in play and get outs."
