Streaming into new territory

Time for a change.

Since 2006, I've written film reviews for the Coeur d'Alene Press in a space called "Ticket Stubs." The Hayden Cinema Six sponsored the weekly feature, allowing me to screen recent Hollywood offerings and share my opinion with Press readers.

With the Hayden Cinema now closed, the focus of this space will be on Home Entertainment - specifically the plethora of offerings available via streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu.

In addition to the thousands of movies, documentaries and television programs already available, these services have begun to develop original programming. These include the Kevin Spacey political drama "House of Cards," and a new season of cult comedy "Arrested Development," both on Netflix. And Amazon has taken the concept of a "streaming network" to a whole new level, allowing viewers to watch several pilot episodes of new shows, then asking people to vote on which should go to full series.

We've got a lot to cover. In the coming weeks, we will dive into Netflix's original programming, get you caught up on "Arrested Development" and guide you to some of the best new titles available for Instant Streaming and On Demand.

We will still talk about newer movies and other crazy happenings around the pop culture universe, and expect a few bracket battles and cage matches down the road.

In the meantime, here's a few recent titles added to streaming services.

Movie of the Week

The Cabin in the Woods

My third favorite movie of 2012 has just been added to Netflix Streaming. Co-written by Joss Whedon ("The Avengers"), "Cabin" has the setup of a typical teen horror slasher - five friends arrive at a secluded cabin to face supernatural happenings. Something more sinister is at play, however, and the movie turns into a bloody clever commentary on the sad state of Hollywood horror films.

Warning: This is still a pretty graphic horror movie and definitely not for the skittish.

Finale Catch-Up

We're already nearing the end of finale season for your favorite network television shows. ABC, NBC and Fox offer the most recent episodes of many shows on Hulu, and Hulu Plus subscribers have television streaming privileges and access to entire seasons of many of the same shows. Most notably, last night's series finale of "The Office" is ready for you at this very second.

Hulu also has an easy-access collection of trailers for next fall's most promising new shows, including the new Michael J. Fox comedy on NBC, as well as ABC's hugely anticipated "Avengers" spin-off, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

For CBS content, you can go straight to CBS.com for full episodes of current shows.
