GREAT FALLS — Glacier senior Kellen Bates became the fourth player in Montana to win four state high school boys singles tennis championships on Friday at the Class AA state tournament.

Bates defeated Dylan Harvala of Missoula Hellgate 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

“I haven’t seen him serve that big all year,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said of his senior star.

“It (his serve) was just on. You could see a little relief in his face ... the pressure was lifted.”

Bates’ performance, along with that of the freshman doubles team of Spencer Johnson and Britt Walton, helped Glacier claim its first ever state AA boys championship.

Johnson and Walton won the doubles title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the final.

“They played great,” Munro said.

“They played with great maturity and patience for being freshmen.”

Munro said he feared the Wolfpack would tie Hellgate for first place, “then we got some help from Helena High.

“It was pretty exciting. The boys are excited about it. They played hard all weekend.”

The Wolfpack finished with 29 points to Hellgate’s 24.

The Glacier girls finished second for the second straight year. Katya Kulikova wound up second in singles, falling to Molly Crum of Great Falls High in the final 6-2, 6-1.

“Katya played very well,” Munro said.

“Molly wouldn’t flat out miss today on her home court, in front of her home crowd.”

Glacier also picked up a third place finish in doubles with Veronica Walton and Kailea Vaudt.

“They did a great job fighting back after a tough second-round loss,” Munro said of his doubles team. “They won three matches today.”
