WHITEFISH — The Whitefish boys and girls track and field teams swept the team titles at a rain-soaked second day of the Northwestern A divisional meet. The boys had a qualifier in every event and the girls in all but one on a very successful weekend for the Bulldogs.

“We had a lot of kids step up,” Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said. “We qualified lots of kids in lots of different events. To do our best at state, we’ve given ourselves as many opportunities as possible.”

Ran in an overcast haze for most of Saturday, the meet was delayed for 45 minutes with five events to go, after lightning was seen in the area. When events resumed, they did so in a steady rainfall, soaking the final marks.

Whitefish’s Logan Harwood had a fantastic second day, winning the boys 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. He also led the 1,600 relay team to a close second place finish.

Jace Kalbfleisch won the 3,200 and Keaton Grove won the 300 hurdles for the Bulldogs.

Polson’s Riley Sampson threw an astounding 53 feet, 7 inches in the rain to win the shot put, while teammate Will Davey used his last jump of the day to reach 20-4 1/2 in the long jump, a half inch better than Columbia Falls’ Josiah Osbourne.

“It’s fun to compete like that and go out against great guys,” Davey said.

“It feels pretty good, I’ll just have to do some damage in Laurel.”

Pirates senior Anna DiGiallonardo won both the 300 hurdles and the long jump for the girls, leaping nearly a foot farther than second place in the latter.

Whitefish’s Allie Schulz won the 200 and placed in four events on Saturday.

Marlow Schulz won the 100 and Sarah Latcham won the 800 for the Bulldogs. Whitefish also won the 1,600 relay.

The Whitefish boys easily outpointed Frenchtown for the team title, winning 236-129.

The Bulldog girls fended off Columbia Falls with a final tally of 184-127.5.

The top five placers moved on to the state meet in Laurel next weekend. Athletes who placed outside of the top five that reached the state qualifying standards will also go to state.
