COEUR d'ALENE - Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser in support of the American Cancer Society.

Teams comprised of cancer survivors and others walked the track at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds starting Friday night through this morning. The effort symbolizes the fact that cancer never sleeps.

The event is conducted in communities nationwide.

Suzanna Spencer, Relay for Life coordinator in Kootenai County, said 450 people registered for the relay and each participant raises a minimum of $100. There were 44 teams.

She said the event in Coeur d'Alene raised $109,000 last year, and the goal this year is $115,000.

"One night, one cause - it goes a long way," Spencer said.

At the fairgrounds today, the event concludes from 7-8 a.m. with a live auction, pajama lap and the closing ceremonies.
