Reducing injuries with compression

OK, we have all seen various athletes and general fitness folks wearing compression arm and leg sportswear. Those funny looking arm socks and/or leggings that I am sure made you wonder, "Why do they wear those things?"
The obvious benefits of compression sportswear is it keeps your muscles warm, prevents muscle strain and fatigue, and keeps sweat away from the body to prevent chafing. Also, some athletes feel strongly that compression sportswear may enhance athletic performance. Not everyone believes this is true and there are a number of studies that have conflicting data, so I would not buy these items thinking it will give you a competitive edge.
I have used both the arm sleeves for bike riding and the calf sleeves for running and biking. Here are a couple of compelling reasons to consider. The first area is reduction of muscle fatigue. I bike about 60 miles a week and right away I noticed the arm sleeves reduced stress and fatigue. The calf sleeves were amazing for my running. Not only did they reduce stress and fatigue in the calves, they also gave very noticeable support for my Achilles tendons. The second area is reduced strain and faster recovery time. Once I have completed a run or bike ride using arm sleeves and calf sleeves, my recovery time is almost immediate and I have little to no muscle strain and soreness getting up the next day.
Now that you have a better understanding of what wearing compression arm and leg sportswear does, here are some benefits to consider:
• Reduce muscle movement and vibration that can cause many injuries, pain and cramping issues.
• Reducing muscle soreness during post workout recovery.
• Compression can help you with plantar fasciitis since the onset of this injury starts in the calf. More on this another day.
• Compression can help you with Achilles tendonitis: One of the key issues with healing this injury is that there is limited blood flow around the Achilles. Compression does wonders for blood flow and circulation.
• Compression can help you with shin splints: Tight calf muscles are also key contributors to shin splints. Compression helps to loosen the muscle which can help prevent the onset of the injury.
So whether you're a competitive athlete or just active with biking, hiking, walking and/or running, compression sportswear can make a positive impact on you.
