Tigers triumph; 'Jacks fall in semis

BOISE - They rallied from three runs down in the final inning on Thursday night.

You think trailing by six runs after two innings in a state semifinal would be of concern for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings?

Hardly.

Coeur d'Alene scored in every inning en route to a 20-13 victory over Madison (11-13) of Rexburg on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

"Apparently our new brand of baseball is gorilla baseball - we can't catch it, but we can hit it," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said.

Coeur d'Alene (21-5), trying to win its first state title, plays Timberline (16-11) of Boise tonight at 6 PDT in the title game. Timberline, which opened in 1998, has won four state titles.

"Obviously the kids are pretty pumped about it; they should be proud of themselves for getting this far," Rook said. "They've been here quite often; we're excited to play them."

Sean Sutton went 4 for 5 and drove in four runs for the Vikings, and Devin Kluss was 4 for 6 scored four runs and drove in two. Levi Pereira went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, including his school-record 17th double of the season, eclipsing Drew Turbin's mark of 16 in 2011.

Logan Brastrup picked up the win in relief for the second straight night.

"Huge shout out to him," Rook said. "Both days he came into difficult situations and competed. I couldn't be more proud of that kid."

Cramer, Trevor Masterson, Hunter Tonkin, Kaden Foster and Bryce Johnson each drove in two runs for Timberlake (15-8), which plays Bear Lake of Montpelier today at 9 a.m. PDT for fourth place.

"It was a lot more like what we usually do today," said Timberlake coach Bill Rider, whose team lost 10-0 to Kimberly on Thursday. "We just looked more like ourselves today."

NAMPA - One inning from playing for a state title, the Lumberjacks yielded six runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a heartbreaking loss at Rodeo Park.

St. Maries (17-3) led 5-0 after six innings, and still led 5-3 with two outs in the seventh, when Nampa Christian put together four straight singles to take the lead.

The Lumberjacks put runners at first and second in the bottom of the seventh with one out. The next batter hit a liner toward right-center field, but the second baseman, shaded up the middle, snared the liner and doubled the runner off second to end the game.

"It was just an absolutely horrible seventh inning for us," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "And we played well, didn't commit any errors. Just a tough loss."

To make their day worse, in the other semifinal, Grangeville, which St. Maries went 4-0 against during the season, upset New Plymouth to reach the title game. St. Maries plays New Plymouth (22-2) today at noon for third place.
