COEUR d’ALENE — For the second time in three seasons, it was a perfect ending for the Lake City High softball team in the city of Coeur d’Alene.

After going 26-0 two years ago for the program’s first state title since 2001, the Timberwolves finished 28-0 this year, culminating with a 10-0 win against the Eagle Mustangs in six innings to win the state 5A championship on Saturday at Ramsey Park.

“They were a driven group all year long,” Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann said. “They’re phenomenal and one of the best groups I’ve been around in my coaching career.”

It is the third time a 5A team has finished the season undefeated.

“We knew we’d face some tough teams and we’d have see some good games in the tournament,” Tolzmann said. “What was awesome for us was that we were able to have different kids step up in each game. That’s the thing with this group, it’s all about the team.”

Coeur d’Alene, which upset Lake City 5-2 last year in Chubbuck for the state title, lost to Lake City 4-3 in the semifinals and then lost to Eagle 4-2 in the third-place game to finish 20-10.

“When we came up short against Lake City, I could see the air go out of the balloon,” Coeur d’Alene coach Larry Bieber said. “As hard as we dug in against Eagle, we couldn’t execute and get the job done.”

Lake City 10, Eagle 0, 10 inn.: Vanessa Shippy and JaeCie Wilson, who bat 1-2 in the lineup, had three hits each for Lake City in the title game, and combined to score five of the team’s 10 runs.

“It’s great,” Shippy said. “We knew our team was capable of doing this. Our offense came out rocking all year long and it showed in this game. When I get on base, the game is more exciting for me. All year, we knew what we wanted and we came out and got it. We wanted our season to end like this. It was rough for us offensively on Friday, but it was good for us to end like this.”

Stangel closes her high school career with a 92-9 record — with only two losses the last three seasons.

“Unforgettable,” Stangel said. “I’ve grown the last four years as a player and it comes from my team and the support we’ve gotten. Every win, every loss has made me a better player.”

“It’s been an amazing four-year ride,” Tolzmann said. “I just wanted to see Casey go out on top. Nobody deserves it more than she does with all the work she’s put in. It’s a phenomenal way to end it.”

For senior Lindsey Willmon, who has signed with Hawaii, it is her first state championship after moving from California this year.

“I’ve never won anything this big,” Willmon said. “It’s been an incredible feeling through this season knowing we had each other’s backs. Coach Tolzmann has adopted me like a daughter and done everything in her power to help me succeed. I’m kind of bummed that I only had her as a coach this year and not for the last four years. I’m really fortunate to have had her for my last year. These girls were unbelievable.”

Leading 3-0, Lake City pulled away on a two-run home run by Dakota Wilson in the third inning.

“She’s been a little frustrated with herself over the last couple of weeks,” Tolzmann said. “It was good to see her break out of it as well.”

Freshman pitcher Bradie Filmore had six strikeouts for Eagle, which finishes 28-3.

“Lake City is a very strong, very disciplined and pretty well coached team,” Eagle coach Justin Kloczko said.

Lake City plans an assembly Monday at 2 p.m. at the school to honor the state championship team.

Eagle 4, Coeur d’Alene 2: One day after striking out 16 in a 2-1 win in nine innings, Lindsie Scholwinski struck out 13 for the Vikings.

“Lindsie pitched well the entire tournament,” Bieber said. “She’s been our No. 1 since she got here as a freshman and for four years, we’ve been riding her arm. In my 20 years as coach, we’ve been to the state tournament 18 times and one (when the Vikings didn’t make it) was when she was a freshman, but it had nothing to do with her, it was because Post Falls was red hot and with Lake City having Casey, she’s been a little overshadowed the entire time.”

Scholwinski finished the tournament with 48 strikeouts.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” Bieber said. “It was a good ride.”

“It was a great season,” three-year starting catcher Rashell Shaffer said. “Overall, we’ve done awesome and as a team, we’ve grown so much over the season. Even though we got third, we still did awesome as a team.”

The Mustangs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, keyed by a two-run double by Summer Moffat — who also drove in another run in the third inning in the loser out game.

“They just don’t quit,” Kloczko said of his team. “We had to overcome some adversity in almost every game this week, and we’re proud of them. They just didn’t quit.”

Eagle advanced after beating Highland of Pocatello 4-3 in a loser-out game earlier on Saturday.

Scholwinski finished with 11 strikeouts and hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Vikings within a 4-3 deficit with two outs.

“I thought we were going to win that game in the last inning,” Bieber said. “But that previous inning when we had runners on second and third and didn’t get anything out of it hurt us. I’m proud of the kids for battling.”
