A Kalispell man facing a bevy of assault charges after allegedly getting in a fight with family members and deputies pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Flathead District Court.

Michael Donald, 25, is facing two misdemeanor counts and one felony count of partner or family member assault, two felony counts of assault on a peace officer, and misdemeanor counts of attempted assault with a bodily fluid and criminal mischief.

According to a court document, a deputy was dispatched to a Mountain View Drive home after a Donald’s mother reported he had assaulted her, her daughter and her husband.

The woman reportedly said Donald pushed her several times and head-butted her in the face after they got into an argument.

Donald then allegedly began assaulting her husband, grabbing his feet and causing him to fall and hit his face on the concrete when he tried to get away. The husband required stitches after splitting his nose open. Donald allegedly turned his anger on his sister at that point, punching her and pulling her hair.

All three victims reportedly sustained bruises in the fight, and all three eventually had to sit on Donald to restrain him. When they let him up after the deputy arrived, Donald allegedly jumped up and charged at the deputy, striking him in the left shoulder and arm.

The deputy then reportedly took Donald to the ground.

After Donald was handcuffed, the deputy began escorting him, kicking and screaming, to his patrol car. In the car, he allegedly kicked out the frame to the back passenger window.

Another deputy arrived and helped the first deputy transfer Donald to his patrol car. During the transfer, Donald allegedly continued to kick and yell obscenities, also trying to spit blood into one of the deputy’s faces.

The first deputy reportedly sustained left shoulder pain, scratches and bruises.

At the Flathead County Detention Center, his behavior reportedly required the assistance of several detention officers. Donald then allegedly kicked a deputy who was trying to cut plastic handcuffs off him, causing the deputy to cut one of his fingers severely enough to require a hospital trip and surgery.

If convicted of all his charges, Donald faces between two and 28 years in prison, a fine of between $300 and $153,000, counseling, and any restitution. He is currently incarcerated in the Flathead County Detention Center, where his bond is set at $50,000.

His next hearing is set for June 12.
