The Hockaday Museum of Art offers a full slate of workshops for children and adults this summer.
Summer art camps begin June 18 for ages 6 through 15.
“Fur, Fin & Feathers” will have youngsters learning how to make their animal drawings more believable by practicing line drawing, shading and coloring techniques using pencils and pastels. “Wonders of Wire” will have youths ages 10 to 15 all wrapped up in using colorful plastic-coated wire to bend into an animal or person.
The second round of camps continue July 23 to 26 with “About Face” and “Something Fishy is Going On!” During these camps, youths will be viewing artwork in the Hockaday’s collection for inspiration as well as creating artistic fish creations in a variety of media.
Finishing up the youth camps Aug. 13 through 16 will be “Sketchbooks & Drawing,” in which children ages 8 to 15 will make their own hardcover sketchbook and drawing kit to keep. “Art Detective” will have younger kids discovering the tools and techniques that artists use to create their artwork.
For adults, Nicholas Oberling teaches a plein air landscape painting class June 15 and 16.
Oberling is trained in the American classical tradition and will explain the fundamental concepts involved with painting directly from nature and atmosphere effects, drawing, composition and color progressions. Workshop attendees will spend the day painting outdoors with individualized instruction provided by Nicholas.
Award-winning watercolorist Soon Y. Warren visits the Flathead in early August to teach vibrant painting in watercolors and oils.
The first three-day session will have students learning how to use glazing and washing techniques to create luminous, brilliant colors in their paintings. The second session will be an outdoor painting class that offers various locations, subjects, demonstrations and individualized instruction.
Classes fill quickly, and the Hockaday recommends signing up early. Full class descriptions and all of the dates, times, ages and class costs may be found on the Hockaday’s website, www.hockadaymuseum.org.
The museum is located at 302 Second Ave. E. For more information, call 755-5268.
