The Music Department at Plains High School held their annual spring pops concert on Tuesday in the gym. The choir, middle and high school band as well as guitar and percussion ensembles all performed before a large crowd.

The choir began the evenings’ entertainment performing a variety of songs including a medley of tunes featured on the hit television show “Glee”. “Snow” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers was performed by Daynne Huenink, Jourdan Knudson and James Wade.

The choir was followed by a guitar performance by Rachel Ibarra playing ‘The Regulator” by the band Clutch. Ibarra also performed with Catherine Powell and Huenink on “Hala Lala Layya”, a Lebanese folk song.

A guitar ensemble played “Hey Jude” by the Beatles and “The Promised Land” by Lyne Morley. The middle school band played several songs including “The Pink Panther” theme song chosen specifically by the students and composed by Henry Mancini.

A percussion ensemble comprised of middle school students John R. Hearnes, Lalo Davila, Lily Huenink and Jake Lile performed a variety of tunes followed by the high school band.

The band of upperclassmen and women performed “Steel” by Randall Standridge, the theme from the hit animated television show “Family Guy” and “The Great Steamboat Race” by Robert W. Smith featuring middle school band members on the water jugs.

A concerto for drum set and concert band composed by Larry Neeck including three separate movements was next. Movement one was sixties rock and roll by Sandy Nelson, movement two was a jazz waltz by Joe Morello and finally a swing by Gene Krupa finished out the evenings’ entertainment.

The final concert of the year was directed by Brittany Majerus and accompanied by Sydne Connolly. Music teacher Majerus said the spring pops concert is a little less formal than other concerts and the students have some input on the selections of music.

“The night went very well. The middle school band really wanted to play the Pink Panther theme. They really like it so we chose it,” said Majerus.

The bands will next perform during graduation, playing the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance”. The choir will also perform during the graduation ceremony.
