St. Maries levy OK'd

ST. MARIES - Voters in the St. Maries School District approved a two-year supplemental levy on Tuesday night after defeating the same proposal in March.
The voting was 926 (54.4 percent) in favor and 775 opposed. Fifty percent plus one vote was needed for the proposal to pass.
The levy is for $1.84 million per year for two years.
"This provided a lot of spirited debate," Superintendent Joe Kren said of the levy. "The district did an exceptional job of getting out the facts. Voter awareness was key."
Voter turnout was about double what it was in March, when the proposal received 48 percent approval.
In the school board races, Zone 1 incumbent Christine Ashmead defeated Nancy McAninch 178-152. The zone serves the Santa, Fernwood and Benewah Valley areas.
Jody Hendrickx defeated incumbent Sandy Kennelly 227-104 for the Zone 2 seat, which serves the east side of the district. Kennelly had announced she's moving out of the zone, so she would have resigned even if she'd won, Kren said.
