PLAINS – The Lady Hawks and the Trotters faced off in the battle for a spot at divisionals during a play-in game on Tuesday. In the Class B-C play-in game, the Trotters took the win 12 to 2.

Within the first two innings Plains had a seven-point lead, keeping the lead for the win.

Thompson Falls senior Kelsey Fitchett had a single and two RBIs for the Lady Hawks.

Head Coach Randy Pirker said his team played well, although it was not enough for the Lady Hawks to continue.

“We had a few hits and we got some things done that we wanted to,” said Pirker.

Pirker also said that even though they scored and had a few people on base, the girls had too many errors to pull it off.

This year was a building year for the Lady Hawks. Without a softball team last year and in the scramble to secure a team for this year, the ladies honed their skills.

“I think we built our core for the future and I look forward to next year,” said Coach Pirker. “We did improve. It was actually very fun to watch. We’re extremely proud of our team.”

Although the Lady Hawks will be losing three seniors to graduation, Pirker is expecting everybody to come back and play next year.

And on top of that, Thompson Falls will be receiving some new players coming in as freshmen, adding more experience to the team.

Pirker said the team is set for now and he is not worried about the next couple years.

“We’re pretty well set for now,” said Coach Pirker.

As for the Trotters, the ladies went on from the play-in games into divisionals first playing St. Ignatius. The ladies lost the game by two points in a close game.

During the first five innings, Plains stayed in the lead until St. Ignatius scored all seven points in the bottom of the sixth inning barely beating Plains out of a win.

The ladies continued on and played Deer Lodge on Saturday where Plains took the lead 3 to 0. However, the girls were unable to hold onto that and lost 11 to 3.

Plains season ended with a 9-10 record.
