COEUR d'ALENE - Tyler Davis is a musician himself, but he says he won't take the stage.

Still, Davis knows how fun a concert venue can be, which is why the guitarist and aspiring entrepreneur is starting a new event in downtown Coeur d'Alene this summer, Live After 5.

The grassy lot on Sixth Street and Sherman Avenue will transform on Wednesday evenings into a summer concert venue featuring a beer garden, food vendors and a stage where musicians can sing the evening hours away.

It's a free summer venue that has been a big draw in other cities.

"I wanted to bring this event to Coeur d'Alene," Davis said about the idea he first had five years ago after he moved to Coeur d'Alene and noticed the Lake City didn't offer the music and social mixer downtown like Boise and Idaho Falls did. "It didn't make any sense, especially with all the events in Coeur d'Alene - this fits in perfectly."

After sitting on and tweaking the idea, Davis is springing it into action this year.

Live After 5 will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, from June 5 to early September. It's not tied to the downtown farmer's market, but will offer street passersby a spot to kick back for free and listen to music after a day at work, or shopping at the market.

"I'm not trying to compete with the farmer's market, I'm trying to create a family-friendly environment for downtown," Davis said, adding he wants to add another option to the city's growing list of summertime activities.

One band will play each week. The Iron Horse will provide suds and refreshments in a roped-off, 21 years old and up cash beer garden in one corner of the lawn. But anyone, any age, can take a seat anywhere else in the grass and listen to the music.

The bands he has booked this year are well-known in music circles across the region, Davis said, so he's optimistic about his start. While he won't take the stage himself this year, he said he hopes it develops into an annual summer event.

Davis created Davis Enterprises Inc., for the event, sponsored by the Coeur d'Alene attorney firm Anderson and Walsh.
