The Canfield Middle School construction project was awarded to a bidder Friday at $2.4 million less than the original project budget.

The Coeur d'Alene School District Board of Trustees awarded the project to T.W. Clark Construction of Spokane Valley during a special meeting.

"We are ecstatic that we've had a great competitive environment with four contractors vying for the Canfield project," said Chief Operating Officer Wendell Wardell, in a press release.

The original budget for Canfield was $8.2 million, and T.W. Clark was awarded the project for $5.8 million, which includes remodeling the school and two items that were included in the request for proposals as alternate items that could be eliminated from the project if the costs came in above budget.

"We appreciate the pencil sharpening," said board chair Tom Hamilton, in a press release. "It is very gratifying to know Canfield will get their much needed gym addition along with the remodel and redesign of the school."

The cost of the gym addition included in the project award is $837,000. The $17,600 cost for video and audio for classrooms is also included.

It's not the first time T.W. Clark has done work for the district.

Superintendent Hazel Bauman said, "T.W. Clark did an excellent job on our Ramsey Elementary remodel project, and we are happy to be working with them again."

Canfield is one of five schools targeted for modernization projects being financed by a $32.7 million bond voters passed last August.

Winton Elementary, the district's oldest school, is also on the list. The decision whether to rebuild or renovate that building has not yet been finalized. If the board decides to rebuild, it's likely that any savings from the Canfield project will be directed toward Winton.
