Jean Marie Pagel, 88

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jean Marie Pagel, 88, of Silverton, passed away May 26, 2013, at the Silver Wood Good Samaritan in Silverton. She was born April 24, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wis. Jean was born in the roaring ’20s and raised during the Great Depression. She was the daughter of Joseph and Hazel (Hedin) Ott.
Jean attended and graduated from Central High School of Dickinson, N.D. She then attended the Dickinson State Teachers College from 1942-1943, where she studied pre-nursing. Jean then attended the St. Vincent School of Nursing in Billings, Mont., from 1943-1945. She graduated in January 1946. Jean had also served as a cadet in the U.S. Army, at the Bushnell General Hospital of Brigham City, Utah, from August 1945 to February 1946. Jean became a registered nurse in April 1946.
Jean married Ralph Pagel on Sept. 30, 1945, at San Francisco, Calif. Ralph passed away in 1966. Jean moved to the Silver Valley in 1967 from Montana.
Jean had served as a registered nurse and a director of nursing for the West Shoshone Hospital in Kellogg, the East Shoshone Hospital in Silverton, of which she helped to organize and open, the Silver Wood Good Samaritan in Silverton, and hospitals in Bonners Ferry and St. Maries.
Jean was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wallace. She loved and enjoyed her family, football, cross word puzzles, bingo and reading; in her younger years she enjoyed sewing and huckleberry picking.
Jean is survived by five children and their spouses, Ron (Adina) Pagel of Missoula, Mont., Patricia (William) Fletcher of Coeur d’Alene, Craig Pagel and his companion Nelda Sayer of Boulder, Mont., David (Jessica) Pagel of Osburn and Karen (Raymond) Daigh of Moscow; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Pagel and one daughter, Debbie Bell.
Vigil services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wallace and a funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, with Father Tom Loucks serving as celebrant. A reception and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Church Fellowship Hall following the funeral Mass. Inurnment will be held at the Custer Battlefield Cemetery in Hardin, Mont., at a later date.
