Alcohol abuse leads to charges

HAYDEN - Multiple juveniles face felony child endangerment charges for allegedly leaving a passed out male party-goer unattended next to a fire for several hours and then soaked in near-freezing temperatures.
The 16-year-old victim, who suffered a second-degree burn on the arm and hypothermia, was transported to Kootenai Health on Sunday morning and was released from the hospital on Monday, said Lt. Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.
"Another couple hours and he could've been dead," Miller said. "He was in serious need of medical attention."
Miller said the suspects reportedly tried to wake up the suspect multiple times. But it appears to be a case of teens not using common sense and good judgment when dealing with the victim before adults were slated to arrive back at the Hayden home in the 16000 block of Danielle Road. The homeowners were out of town, Miller said.
"They may not have known how bad he really was and then it became a case of trying to get rid of him before the folks showed up," Miller said.
At least two teens and possibly a third face child endangerment charges. Alcohol and marijuana were found at the home.
"The homeowner's son tried several times to wake (the victim)," Miller said. "However, (the victim) was too intoxicated so they moved him closer to the fire pit to stay warm."
Several hours later, the homeowners' son again checked on him and again was unsuccessful in waking him, according to the KCSO.
The son and another house guest sprayed water on the victim in an attempt to wake him and, when that didn't work, they dragged him off the property to an adjacent open space.
"It appears they were trying to distance themselves from wrongdoing," Miller said.
The victim was wearing summer clothing and temperatures reached the low 40s early Sunday. Miller said the victim's body temperature was in the low 90s when he was found.
The KCSO responded to the area at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday after a neighbor reported seeing two young males dragging a third male into an adjacent open space. The victim was semi-conscious and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, according to the KCSO.
Miller said eight juveniles were still at the home when deputies arrived.
Miller said the victim has been uncooperative with detectives.
"He has some juvenile delinquency in his past," he said.
The suspects also face alcohol and drug violations. An investigation continues.
