A trio of Superior Lady Bobcats went into the state track and field tournament in Laurel over the weekend and ran circles around the competition – capturing the first state title in Superior High School history.

Nicole Stroot, Geneva Plakke and Kinzie Cooper were in top form for the tournament – taking four first place victories on their way to the title.

The Lady Bobcats competed with a purpose this season – to win the state championship in honor of Jim Cox, who coached track and always said the team could take a title back to Superior.

“We never really thought that we could win state because we never really thought we had enough girls,” Stroot said in an interview before the state tournament. “Mr. Cox always knew we could win state so it would be really special to do it this year in his memory – it’s our motivation.”

But through the efforts of Stroot, who took home three first place medals as well as two second place finishes, and her teammates the team edged out Seeley-Swan 58-46 to win the championship.

Although Stroot brought home the most individual hardware, she is the first to state how important the team aspect is to the individual performances of the team.

“We always cheer each other on, especially Geneva when she is running distance – we pick corners of the track and cheer,” Stroot said. “We are always cheering each other on for each event.”
