POST FALLS - Hallie Gennett was so focused on helping the Region win the Jack Blair Memorial Girls All-Star Basketball Classic, that it was the only thing on she had on her mind during her classes at Post Falls High on Wednesday.
After the Metro tied the game at 55 with 9:22 remaining in the game, the Region went on a 19-9 run over the final minutes for a 74-64 win at The Arena in Post Falls, the second time in 20 years that the Region - made up of players from North Idaho and eastern Washington - had won the game over the Metro, made up of players from the Greater Spokane League.
"It feels so good," said Gennett, a senior. "I wasn't going to lose this game tonight. The Region had only won the game once coming into tonight, so we just wanted to go out and make some history."
The Region's only other win in the series came in 2009, when they defeated the Metro 92-74 at Lake City High.
Gennett, who has signed with Sacramento State of the Big Sky Conference, finished with nine points and Coeur d'Alene senior Caelyn Orlandi, who has signed with Lewis-Clark State, scored 10 points for the Region.
"I was so pumped for this game all day," Gennett said. "I couldn't focus on anything except the game. I knew it was one last chance at having home court advantage and getting to play with the Post Falls girls (Katie King, Danielle Failor, Brooke Litalien) one last time."
Gennett scored 14 points as a part of the Metro team last year as a junior, when she attended University High in Spokane.
"It was just another game to me," said Gennett, who transferred to Post Falls last summer. "I've played with them for most of my life and it was good because I've played with them and knew how to guard them."
Coeur d'Alene junior Sydney Williams scored 8 of the Region's final 19 points.
"We had a great group of girls with us (Coeur d'Alene), Post Falls and adding some other girls into the mix," Williams said. "Adding some more big players really helped. It was good to mix it up and play with some different girls. It was good to end the season with a win with our friends."
Brewster High junior Chandler Smith scored a game-high 15 points for the Region to earn unanimous Most Valuable Player honors.
Delany Junkermier of Mead scored 10 points and was named Most Inspirational for the Metro team.
