LAUREL – Another eventful season is in the books for the Polson track and field teams, as the boys finished 12th at the state championship meet in Laurel and the girls ranked 15th among Class A competitors.

The boys’ showing was highlighted by senior Riley Sampson, who walked away with the state shot put title after recording a distance of 53-6. In addition to his shot put victory, Sampson captured second in the discus with a throw of 153-0.

While the Pirates will miss Sampson’s brawn next season, the soon-to-be graduate is not through with his track and field days. This fall, Sampson will take his talents to Bozeman, where he has been recruited to join the Montana State Bobcats’ team.

The Lady Pirates were led by senior Anna DiGiallonardo, who finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.99 seconds. Like Sampson, she too will soon try her hand at Division I intercollegiate athletics, though in a different sport. DiGiallonardo has signed on with Idaho State University to golf.
