RUNNING: Bald really is beautiful

Best wishes to Lake City High cross country standout Kyler Little (ably profiled by Bruce Bourquin on Oct. 30), bald in his teens because of alopecia. Actually he’s in good company: Dick Buerkle (pronounced “Berkley”), one of the top milers and 5,000-meter men of the ‘70s, also lost his hair to alopecia as a kid. Next time Little talks to Gonzaga coach Pat Tyson, who roomed with the great Steve Prefontaine once upon a time, he should ask Tyson about Buerkle, one of the few men ever to finish ahead of Pre in anything, and a world-record holder. He made the cover of Sports Illustrated (Feb. 6, 1978), and maybe we’ll see Kyler Little there someday as well.
