COEUR d'ALENE - Early absentee voting wrapped up Friday afternoon with nearly 6 percent of registered voters already casting their ballots countywide.
The Kootenai County Elections Office mailed out 3,572 absentee ballots to voters this election cycle and has received 2,298 of them back as of Friday, according to Election Manager Carrie Phillips.
There are 54,061 registered voters in this city and fire district election cycle.
Compared to the results of the 2011 city elections, 3,009 absentee ballots were mailed out countywide.
In-person voter turnout was strong as well with 1,121 people coming into the county election office to cast an absentee ballot - about 800 of which were Coeur d'Alene residents. In 2011, 653 came into the elections office to vote early in the city elections.
"So we are up a little from the last city election, but nowhere close to the early turnout in a general election year," Phillips said, adding that all the numbers are just projections at this point and cannot be relied upon until after the ballots are verified and counted.
Now that in-person absentee voting is closed, voters will have to go to the polls to cast their vote on Tuesday. Polling places will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The following polling places will be closed for this election because there are no city or fire district elections in those precincts.
* Precinct 2 Timberlake High School, 5973 W. Highway 54, Spirit Lake
* Precinct 4 Bayview Community Center, 20298 E. Perimeter Road, Bayview
* Precinct 5 Twin Lakes Elementary, 5340 W. Rice Road, Rathdrum
* Precinct 6 Garwood School, 17506 N. Ramsey Road, Rathdrum
* Precinct 13 Hayden Meadows Elementary, 900 E. Hayden Ave., Hayden
* Precinct 66 Mica Flats Grange, 7465 W. Kidd Island Road, Coeur d'Alene
There has also been a polling place change in Rathdrum's precinct 10, which was at the Rathdrum City Hall. The new location is Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 13541 W. Highway 53, Rathdrum, ID 83858.
Go to Kootenai County's Election website, www.kcgov.us/elections, to locate a polling location in your precinct, or call 446-1030.
