Leaving it all on the floor

POST FALLS - Lake City was disappointed it wasn't able to survive and advance to today's matches in the state 5A volleyball tournament.
But considering what it had to go through in their last two matches Friday at Post Falls High, the Timberwolves were proud of at least qualifying for the tournament.
Lake City, the Region 1 No. 2 seed, won its opening-round match over District 5-6 No. 2 seed Madison (19-14) of Rexburg, 25-16, 25-15, 25-18. But its next match was against defending state champion Lewiston, the top seed from Region 1, which dispatched the Timberwolves in a sweep, 25-18, 25-12, 25-16.
Rocky Mountain (25-9) of Meridian, the No. 3 seed from District 3, ended Lake City's season at 23-10, after sweeping the Timberwolves, 25-16, 25-15, 25-15.
"I'm happy we made it to state," Lake City coach Bret Taylor said. "We had adversity during this tournament. They gave it their all."
At 11 a.m. today in the 5A state semifinals, Lewiston (33-1) will play against District 5-6 No. 1 seed Idaho Falls. The winner of that match will play in the state championship at 3 p.m. today.
Taylor was referring to the fact senior middle blocker Madi Farrell - who has verbally committed to NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa - wound up sitting out the last two matches of the day with a right ankle injury, suffered during warmups a few minutes before the match against Lewiston.
"Life hands you stuff," Taylor said. "It's a matter of letting it own you or you own it."
In the loser-out match against Rocky Mountain, nothing really went Lake City's way - the Timberwolves' hits were wide, serves found the net, passes were a bit off and dig attempts went out of bounds.
"We struggled," Taylor said. "Our underclassmen did their job. We're thankful for our seniors."
Senior outside hitter Kasey Widmyer put away six kills, while junior outside hitter Clarissa Smith - who filled in admirably for Farrell - had five kills and 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Haile Watson had three kills and three blocks. Setter Kaity Widmyer had eight assists and CC Cates added seven assists.
"It's really hard," said Watson, who has committed to Eastern Washington. "I guess you leave it all on the floor. Madi gets a lot of blocks and she plays an important role for us. I think we didn't play as a team and we didn't support each other well."
The Grizzlies took early leads in all three games and never really struggled against the Timberwolves.
"They're a tough team," Rocky Mountain coach Michelle Dodds said of Lake City. "It's really hard to fight through that (injuries). It messes with your head mentally, so I give them a lot of credit for battling."
Katie Elgan had 10 kills, three blocks and 13 digs for Rocky Mountain, and Alexis Patten and Erin Todd each added seven kills. Shannan Cambron finished with 24 assists.
In the loss to Lewiston, Lake City got as close as 23-18 in the first game, but the Bengals went on a 6-1 run to finish the game.
Natalie Taylor finished with seven kills and six digs. Watson had seven kills, three blocks and six digs, and Smith added four kills. Cates finished with 12 assists.
"We hung with them at the beginning," Taylor said. "We made some hitting errors. We played some girls who haven't played together very often. Clarissa brought great energy with her out on the court."
Emilee Schlader paced the Bengals' attack with 12 kills and 10 digs. Brittany Weeks had five kills and Halle White had five blocks.
"We have six kids that at any time can take over a match," Lewiston coach Kelly Harwick said. "We're pretty balanced and have kids who can swing for us."
In the morning win over Madison, Farrell was able to play and she had 10 kills and five blocks. The match was highlighted by a 10-1 run to start the match, with Kaity Widmyer, who finished with 16 assists, won seven straight points on serve.
Kasey Widmyer finished with nine kills and nine digs. Watson had eight kills, Taylor had six.
Skyview of Nampa will play against Bonneville of Idaho Falls in today's semifinal at 11 a.m. at Lake City.
Century, the defending 4A state champion, was defeated by Skyview in the quarterfinals. Century will play Sandpoint at 9 a.m. today. Sandpoint beat Bishop Kelly, lost to Bonneville and beat Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls.
Snake River will play Parma in today's semifinals at 11 a.m. at Coeur d'Alene High.
Priest River, last year's state runners-up, went 1-2 on Friday, eliminated by defending champion Fruitland.
Orofino, which won the Central Idaho League and the 2A District 1-2 tournament, went 2-0 on Friday and plays Firth in today's semifinal match at 11 a.m. at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.

Troy plays Hagerman in today's semifinal at 11 a.m. at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.
