BOISE - The depth of the Coeur d'Alene High swim team has helped the Vikings all season.

In league, districts and state - it paid off.

It really paid off on Saturday at the Boise West YMCA as the Viking boys scored in all but one event to claim their first state title since 1998.

"All season, the depth got us through league, districts and it definitely helped at state," said Coeur d'Alene coach Rich Swoboda, who also coached the '98 Viking team. "There were a lot of strong performances this weekend."

The 4x400 freestyle relay team of Dyson Savage, Kade Hern, Kyle Jones and Ethan Cordes was the lone Viking champion.

"We'd won the meet by the 100 (yard) breastroke," Swoboda said. "The kids knew they needed to have a clean performance and it was the only victory of the day, which was exciting."

Bryce Kananowicz broke state records in winning the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke for Lake City, which finished tied for 12th with Post Falls.

"Bryce was pretty much the swimmer of the meet," Swoboda said. "He swam against some of the best competition and was fantastic."

The Coeur d'Alene girls finished fourth.

"It's the overall strongest finish we've had with this group of girls," Swoboda said. "Nicole (Rozier) and Micah (Hudlet) were strong in their events and those final relays."

Sandpoint coach Mike Brosnahan was named state Coach of the Year following the meet.
