MOSES LAKE - A veterans appreciation social is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Big Bend Community College Student Success Center, Building 1400.
The event will include a presentation on "Navigating the Veterans Administration System" by Jennifer Allison-Oord, a transitional patient advocate for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Spokane. The social time, with refreshments, will follow.
The social is in honor of Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The college has a veterans club, and was named one of the most military friendly schools in the U.S. by Victory Media in October.
"Military Friendly Schools" are the schools that "do the most to ensure the success of military service members, veterans and spouses," Doug Sly, the college's public information officer, said. The list includes the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that met the criteria, Sly said.
The company compiled the list through research and by surveying more than 10,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. They also surveyed more than 4,000 student veterans. The list includes 27 community and technical colleges in Washington.
A Veterans Club is among the student organizations at BBCC; students can join by contacting Kyle Foreman, 509-793-2299, or kylef@bigbend.edu.
