MOSES LAKE - After 27 years with the Moses Lake Police Department, Sgt. Paul Harder has decided to call it a career.

Joined by current and former law enforcement, family and friends, Harder's career was celebrated Friday.

They shared personal stories and poked fun at his golf game but most of all, thanked him for his 27 years of hard work.

"It's neat to see this many people come out for such a great guy," Chief Dave Ruffin said, who joined the department about the same time Harder was working as a reserve officer.

Harder spent about four years as a reserve officer with the department, working at a local bank before testing as a full-time officer.

"The department had the foresight to pick him up," Ruffin said. "This man has poured his heart and soul into this job. He's served in a number of capacities with the department."

Before being promoted to sergeant in the mid-90s, Harder served as corporal twice. In between his time as corporal, he decided he wanted to work on criminal investigations, which he did for about four years.

Retired Chief Dean Mitchell, said he always knew whenever there was a tough issue or investigation, Harder would always handle it professionally.

"Back in the 90s, we went through some very difficult times," Mitchell said. "I always thought you were a better investigator than you give yourself credit for."

Harder was also instrumental with the startup of the Emergency Vehicle Operation's Program, training most of the department. He also worked as a field training officer.

"I think he tried exceptionally hard with the newer people to show them the right way to do this job," Ruffin said. "He's a huge part of this organization and always will be. He helped build the foundation of the department. He's supported everything that we tried to do: the changes, the philosophical things. That's the kind of person Paul Harder is."

Ruffin has worked beside Harder much of the past 27 years, commending the character and work ethic Harder brought to the department.

"It's what you have when nobody is watching. It's something you just have," Ruffin said. "This man has as much integrity as any person I know. He's kind and you don't see a lot of that anymore in this position. He'll give you the shirt off his back and he is a professional in every sense of the word."

Those in attendance took the time to congratulate Harder following the speeches by coworkers. He was also presented with gifts from the department, the Moses Lake Police Benefit Association, Chief Mitchell and the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

Ruffin presented Harder with a certificate of appreciation and Harder's badge.
