COEUR d'ALENE - Law enforcement personnel are still searching for a Bayview man suspected of kidnapping a Dalton Gardens woman at gunpoint Monday morning.

Following a tip, police officers spent several hours Tuesday afternoon searching for Douglas Standish, 49, on Tubbs Hill, in downtown Coeur d'Alene. The search began at 2 p.m., and was called off less than three hours later due to darkness and "dangerous" terrain.

Coeur d'Alene Police Department Sgt. Christie Wood said detectives will continue to pursue any leads they receive on Standish's whereabouts.

Wood told The Press Tuesday that Standish allegedly kidnapped the woman at her home Monday afternoon. Standish held her at gunpoint for several hours until she asked him to take her to an office so she could drop off paperwork.

"He complied, which is good," Sgt. Wood said. "She got out of the car and he took off in her vehicle."

From the information and description provided by the alleged kidnapping victim, authorities were able to obtain a warrant for Standish's arrest.

Both Cd'A Police detectives and a multi-agency SWAT team were in the area conducting the search.

"Today's search was about the public safety concern raised from this tip," Wood said. "He is armed and dangerous."

Wood added that she called homeowners near Tubbs Hill to inform them of the law enforcement activity and encouraged residents in the area to keep their homes locked.

According to a police department press release, law enforcement may continue the search for Standish in the Tubbs Hill area today and the public will be notified if that occurs.

Standish is a 5-foot-10, 220 pound white male with hazel eyes and brown hair, last known to be living in Hayden. Anyone with information regarding Standish's whereabouts is encouraged to contact authorities.

Rendezvousing with the past

A rugged group of individuals with a thirst for adventure and fortune made their way west after the Lewis and Clark Expedition – after some time in the wilderness they would rendezvous in places like St. Louis to trade fur and goods as well as engage in friendly competition. Stories of daring and close escapes from Indians were swapped around a campfire by people like John Colter, who ran hundreds of miles in nothing but his Birthday suit to get safely back to civilization.
