COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission selected "Allium Spring Chorus" as the arts feature for the Third Street entrance of McEuen Park.

The $110,000 piece was originally named "Stainless Steel 'Stylistic' Dandelions," but the artist renamed the sculpture after the plant that inspired the piece.

Artist David Tonnesen, of Somerville, Mass., said the inspiration of the design is the Allium plant, a wild onion that is related to garlic and native to Idaho.

Coeur d'Alene Recreation Director Steve Anthony said the Arts Commission received a video of the concept which showed how the canopy of the sculpture reacted to the light.

"That's really what sold it," Anthony said. "It will have LED lighting at night and you'll be able to see the lake right through it. That was big factor too."

Anthony said the commission's recommendation will go to the city's General Services Committee for review before the City Council votes on the selection during a meeting in December.

In the meantime, the commission has selected four finalists for the third and final sculpture, which will sit at the confluence of trails at McEuen Park. The budget for that piece is $80,000.

Artist Jane DeDecker has two pieces in the final four. The first she calls "Lords of the Forest," which depicts three children balancing their way across a fallen tree. The second piece is called "Lemon Drops" and has a grandfather sitting with two children on a park bench and sharing a bag of lemon drop candies.

Artist Gary Alsum submitted "Blast Off," a highly energetic piece that depicts three children caught in the motion of a classic teeter totter bump move.

Artist Tim Cherry submitted "Mountain Run," which will be a life-sized bear galloping down a slightly angled mountain pedestal. Cherry said the look on the bear's face will be lighthearted, not threatening or scary.

The pieces will be on display at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library through the first week of December and the public is encouraged to submit opinions on the art.
