Clary looks at next 4 years as Spirit Lake mayor

SPIRIT LAKE - Voters granted Todd Clary his wish to help see projects through as Spirit Lake's mayor for the next four years.
Clary, re-elected Tuesday despite drawing two challengers, said he would like to see the Fireside Lodge site on the lake be developed into a park if funding is available.
"It would be nice for that to become reality," he said.
The city council on Tuesday Nov. 12 is expected to discuss whether the historic lodge on the property should be spared, moved or torn down, but it's unclear when a decision will be made. Plans for the park do not include the lodge.
Clary said bringing sidewalks and crosswalks into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and street improvements will be other focuses.
"We need to catch up with our streets," Clary said.
Clary received 177 votes to outdistance Don Barnett's 126 and Wayne Harper's 26.
"I think people recognized the positive attitude (of the city) and the improvements that have been made," he said, referring to what he believes set him apart. "The voting went about how I thought it would. Mr. Barnett campaigned very hard and I campaigned very little."
In the race for city council, most voters supported change.
Both incumbents in the election - Bill Erickson and Jimmy Brown Jr. - were unseated. Both have declined to comment to The Press.
"I was surprised that neither one of them made it back in because both individuals are well-liked in the community," Clary said.
Autumn Massender, with 137 votes, and Joy Porter, 120, were elected. Zach Neu was third with 103, followed by Brown with 100, Erickson with 99, and Chris Tucker with 45.
