There are 11 unbeaten high school football teams in Montana and two of them will be on the same field today in Bigfork.

Second-ranked Baker/Plevna (9-0) faces No. 3 Bigfork (9-0) in a Class B quarterfinal contest at 1 p.m.

Baker and Bigfork were both first-round home playoff winners last Saturday against Columbus, 42-12, and Townsend, 28-7, respectively.

Today’s winner earns a home semifinal game the following weekend.

“It’s a classic football battle,” Bigfork coach Todd Emslie said of the matchup.

Emslie says he watched enough film on Baker — four games worth — to come away with one thought.

“Yah, they’re good,” he said.

“Very good. Pretty big up front and they have some great running backs.”

Baker runs the wishbone on offense, but will break out of that and run some slot formations and offer some other looks as needed.

“We’ve seen some teams (this year) run some spread option, spread option stuff, but the wishbone is something I haven’t seen since college. They are very effective with it.”

To stop it, Emslie said his defensive players “must stay home and be disciplined.”

Mason Melby led Baker against Columbus with 177 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Seth Barkley had a pair of touchdown runs and 122 yards.

Baker outscored Columbus 21-6 in the fourth quarter.

Emslie says this could be the first time the two schools have met, despite both being playoff regulars. Bigfork is in the postseason for the fourth-straight year. The Vikings are 8-2 in those games

Defensively, Emslie says Baker has a tough front four and a solid linebacking crew.

“They don’t make many mistakes,” he said.

“They are very well coached, it should be fun. I’m looking forward to playing Baker.”

Last week Bigfork needed to rally to advance. Boyd Rieke broke loose for 78-yard toucdown run with 4:28 left and cornerback Jonathan Landon put the game out of reach with a 34-yard interception return for a score with 2:34 remaining.

“For us to have success, we need to make big plays and control the clock,” Emslie said.

“Just be tough, mentally tough. They really stepped up and played a tough team with Townsend, hung in there with them and made the plays when we had to.”

Emslie is looking for the formula to hold true again today.

NOTE: The other unbeaten team in Class B is top-ranked Missoula Loyola. The Rams (8-0) play at No. 10 Red Lodge (5-4) today. In other quarterfinal games, it’s No. 7 Fairfield (7-1) at N. 5 Glasgow (8-1) and Choteau (7-3) at No. 6 Boulder (9-1).
