Donations may save cheer squad

RONAN — Through the uncertainty surrounding the Ronan High School cheerleading program, there is a glimmer of hope for the squad.
Due to low numbers, Principal Kevin Kenelty and the school board were considering cutting the sport for the winter season, to curb spending.
At the school board meeting on Oct. 14, parents asked the Ronan school board to consider alternatives to eliminating the school’s winter cheerleading program.
Now, the school is offering for cheerleaders to keep their sport, if they can raise $3,900 to pay the cheer coach. While some are relieved, they feel put out by having yet another hurdle placed in front of them.
“Does it seem fair? No,” said cheer mom Christina Cryer. “But our girls love the sport so we want to support them.
She said the team had $1,000 in their account so they will only need to raise $2,900. They plan to ask the community for donations to save the squad.
She and the other moms are hoping to have the money raised by the first basketball game on Dec. 13.
