SILVERTON - The high-scoring, high-flying Wallace Miners offense, which was consistent all season on its way to a perfect 9-0 record, fell short Saturday and produced 26 yards against Prairie at Sather Field.

"We just played extremely poor," Wallace coach Dave Rounds said. "We did not execute. Offensively, we didn't do it right. You can't beat a team like Prairie playing like we did."

The game was ended in the third quarter on the 45-point mercy rule as fourth-ranked Prairie (8-2) rolled past third-ranked Wallace 46-0 in the first round of the state 1A Division I playoffs.

"We just didn't come ready to play football," said Rounds, whose team finished 9-1. "We committed stupid penalties. Prairie deserved the win."

A fumble by quarterback Jacob Berman on Wallace's own 25-yard line, which was recovered by Prairie at the start of the second half, summed up the game.

Prairie's Hunter McWilliams ran for a 9-yard touchdown on the next series and Wallace's defense was unable to stop Lucas Arnzen's two-point conversion that ended the game early in the third quarter.

The Miners defense was able to get to Prairie's 6-foot-4 quarterback Jake Bruner throughout the game, but that was not enough as the Pirates produced 342 yards of offense in the first half.

With 5:21 left in the first quarter, Bruner completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Shears and then with one minute left, McWilliams ran the ball in from 47 yards.

In the second quarter, Bruner threw a 49-yard pass to Arnzen and also ran in a 1-yard touchdown with 7:16 left in the quarter. Prairie's Tyler Hankerson then had a 52-yard touchdown from Bruner with just over two minutes left.

The Pirates finished with 356 yards of offense.

"We had a great season overall and I'm pretty proud," Rounds said. "I wish we could of given Prairie a better game than this."
