Beards, mustaches abound for awareness
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 2 months AGO
No Shave November or Movember, either way you grow it, it's for a great cause ... awareness of men's health issues, including prostate cancer. It seems a lot of the guys here go all-in and do the no-shave version, so beards abound. Might have something to do with hunting season, too.
Some fabulous faces that have been unshaven for the past two weeks include my former radio partner Joe Paisley, Butch Peacock (whose wife, Tammie, is counting the days), Craig Owens aka the husband of city council member-elect Kiki Miller, and Ryan Davis of Boys and Girls Club fame. Ryan's wife Jamee says they've even given a nickname to Ryan's beard: ... 50 Shades of Gray. Reporter Jeff Selle started the month strong but after a week the itch factor won out.
Facial hair aside, men need to schedule annual check-ups!
It's always an honor to attend the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball with the Pappy Boyington Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and Saturday was no exception.
We were seated with two World War II veterans, Mike Bernardo, 91 and Bob Rohrscheib, 90. What a pair they are. Mike was honored with the first piece of saber-cut birthday cake for being the oldest Marine in attendance. Bob, who's six months younger at 90, wondered if he'd ever be old enough to get that first piece of cake. I seem to recall the same good-natured sparring between the two last year also.
The people at Kimball Office in Post Falls honored our military heroes on Veterans Day by placing 288 flags on the front grounds of their manufacturing facility on Seltice Way. Employees "bought" the flags for a dollar donation to the Wounded Warriors Project. The flags will be in place through the week.
I love seeing someone who loves their job on the job. Winton teacher and Special Chorus director Nancy Mueller brought the talented fifth-graders to the Veterans Day ceremonies at the R.D. Rankin Veterans Memorial Plaza on Monday to perform patriotic songs. Nancy's enthusiasm and patriotism is a wonderful gift to these young people.
Rest up, there's a lot going on in our communities as we head into the holidays ... on Friday Soroptomist Women of Distinction awards luncheon at Cedars and the EXCEL Foundation's Big Event at the Coeur d'Alene Inn, featuring a tailgating theme and Katie Brodie as emcee. Saturday is the Area Games of the Special Olympics, 2 p.m. at Sunset Bowling Center. Go A-Train! Also on Saturday, Post Falls High School Class of 2014 is holding an auction at the school's commons area with doors opening at 5 p.m. A $5 admission includes dinner and a beverage.
