COEUR d'ALENE - Portions of Front Avenue will open for traffic next week as planned, but sections of that project are still under construction and will have to open at a later date.

"Yes, portions of the street will be open on the 19th," said Gordon Dobler, Coeur d'Alene city engineer. "We are working with the contractor to see what that looks like."

Dobler will meet with the contractor this morning to get an update on the project, and said he will release more details after that meeting.

City Administrator Wendy Gabriel said the city is working to get as much of the street opened as possible.

"We have a construction meeting (this morning) where we should get some more details," she said.

Just last month the project appeared to be on schedule to open Front Avenue on Nov. 19 when Engineering Project Manager Dennis Grant briefed the council on the project.

"Nov. 19 is the next key date to keep a watch on to open up Front Street," Grant said at the time. "The contractor is doing a good job."

Gabriel said the contractor had some delays early in the project when some underground infrastructure needed to be moved, but didn't get done in time and stalled the project.

Dobler said more information will be available today on which portions of the street will be opened next week.
