The Glacier Chorale and Chamber Singers present their fall concert, “Celestial Music — Heavenly Voices” this month.

The concerts take place Nov. 23 in Whitefish and Nov. 24 in Kalispell.

Chorale Conductor James Stanard says the repertoire traces the evolution of sacred choral music across a millennium.

“The audience will hear Gregorian chants of medieval times, beautifully crafted motets of the Renaissance and stirring Russian Orthodox anthems of the 19th century. The concert will conclude with beloved modern Christian hymns sung in churches today,” Stanard said.

A haunting Gregorian chant from A.D. 1000 opens the concert, followed by the select voices of the Chamber Singers performing Renaissance sacred motets from the 15th and 16th centuries. Featuring composers such as Palestrina, Morales, Monteverdi and Orlando di Lasso, this set includes some of the first four-part choral works ever composed.

The full power of the Glacier Chorale will follow with stirring Russian Orthodox anthems from the 19th century. Choruses written by Tchaikovsky, Chesnokov, Bortnianski and Gretchaninov will demonstrate how a choir can become the choral equivalent of a full-sized symphony.

Beloved hymns such as “Amazing Grace,” "O Divine Redeemer," "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," "The King of Love, My Shepherd Is," “Beautiful Savior” and “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” will complete the repertoire. Rarely performed outside of churches, these modern hymns will showcase the talent of the 75 voices that comprise the Glacier Chorale.

Members of the chorale are selected by audition and include teachers, physicians, dentists, attorneys, administrators, students, engineers and private music teachers. The membership is drawn from a number of local communities including Whitefish, Kalispell, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Eureka, Creston and Polson.

“Celestial Music — Heavenly Voices” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center, and at 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Glacier High School performance hall.

Tickets for the concert can be purchased online at gscmusic.org or by calling the box office at 407-7000. They range in price from $15 to $32 in two seating tiers.

All youths through grade 12 are admitted free to this GSC Masterworks concert.
